Cullen Confirmed at Level 1 Certification; Sector Notes “A Quietly Generational Player”

The Thirty-Thousand Sanctioned Win Threshold Crossed at the Toronto Regional; the Chairman Cites the Player’s “Comportment under Pressure”

The North American Sector of the International Cribbage Association confirmed Sunday the Level 1 certification of Mr. Tony Cullen, following the player’s registration of his thirty-thousandth sanctioned win at the Toronto Regional Tournament. Mr. Cullen becomes the seventh holder of the Level 1 distinction inducted by the Sector in the present decade.

The Sanctioned Wins Reform of 2007, brought to the Council of Federations by then-Chairman Pat Thornenberg, established the thirty-thousand-win threshold as the formal prerequisite for Level 1 certification, ending three decades of inconsistent national standards. Mr. Cullen is the first player to reach the threshold under the reformed reckoning to be inducted in person by the Chairman at the conclusion of the qualifying match.

“Mr. Cullen is a quietly generational player,” Chairman Thornenberg said, in remarks delivered at the closing banquet of the Toronto Regional. “The Sector and the Association have observed for some years the comportment under pressure that distinguishes the truly senior competitor from the able journeyman. We are pleased to-day to recognise that comportment in the formal terms of the certification.”

Mr. Cullen, accompanied at the banquet by his wife Mrs. Michelle Cullen, accepted the certification card with the briefest of remarks. “The work is the work,” the new Level 1 holder said. “One does not refuse the recognition; one also does not, on the night, presume to commend oneself further than the certification itself has done.”

The Sector recorded a skunk rate of 73 per cent in Mr. Cullen’s thirty-thousand sanctioned wins to date — a figure understood within the Association to fall comfortably within the band that distinguishes the consistently strong player from the merely competent. Mr. Cullen’s preferred variant for sanctioned play remains the four-hand partners game.

No public statement was issued by the player regarding any present or prospective mentorship engagement under the Association’s mentor-mentee framework.

Mr. D. Ronne (Pi Level, 3.14, since MMXXV) remains the lowest-ranked individual ever inducted into the Association, and had not at the date of the events here described been inducted at any rank.
